This Week in Blue Angel Athletics - October 18, 2021

Mount Mary University soccer and volleyball teams host events this week while cross country will try for Friday afternoon in This Week in Blue Angel Athletics for October 18.

Sabercats, Red Devils Next Up for Soccer

Mount Mary soccer snapped a 13-game losing streak with a Sunday draw at crosstown rival Alverno, a dubious mark dating back to the 2019 season. The Blue Angels will look to build on that step in the right direction with a rematch with Maranatha Baptist Tuesday before traveling for a Sunday afternoon battle with Eureka.

Mount Mary (0-11-1) is still seeking its first win of the season, but this young team has taken big strides already this season. They will get their next chance at revenge against the Sabercats of MBU Tuesday afternoon at MMU Soccer Field, having fallen 5-0 in the team's first meeting in Watertown… Maranatha Baptist (1-9-1) enters Tuesday's matchup fresh off a pair of gritty one-goal home losses over the weekend. The Sabercats dropped a 1-0 decision to Finlandia University Thursday, then fell 2-1 in an OT heartbreaker to Great Lakes Christian College Saturday in which the Crusaders scored in the 89th minute and again in the fourth minute of overtime to steal the win... Eureka (3-10) has a pair of victories over Blackburn earlier this season, but was shutout by Spalding 3-0 and Greenville, 6-0, last week in SLIAC play. The Red Devils will host another pair of SLIAC foes in Principia and Webster Tuesday and Saturday, respectively.

Volleyball Welcomes Five for Autumn Classic

MMU Volleyball welcomes five teams to the Mount Mary Autumn Classic for 10 matches of non-stop, dual-court action Friday and Saturday. The Blue Angels will face all four teams in the round-robin format, beginning with Calumet College of St. Joseph Friday afternoon.

Mount Mary (6-17) split a Saturday slate at the Rockford Triangular, sweeping Alverno before falling 3-1 to the host Regents… Calumet-St. Joseph (6-21), Mount Mary's lone NAIA opponent on the 2021 schedule, has a very busy week ahead of it. The Crimson Wave knocked off CCAC foe Roosevelt 3-1 Monday and will host Indiana-South Bend Tuesday, travel to Lincoln (Ill.) Thursday, and finish off with four matches Friday and Saturday… Maranatha Baptist (9-10) is looking to eclipse the .500 mark for the first time this season, having knocked off MMU Thursday and sweeping Emmaus Bible Friday evening… Finlandia (9-13) also hopes to right the ship after facing likely its toughest competition last weekend at the Blugold Invitational. The Lions, who are 3-0 against MMU and 4-1 against this weekend's field, were swept by perennial powers Illinois Wesleyan, UW-Eau Claire, and UW-La Crosse… Beloit (5-14) has notable season victories over Alverno, Rockford, and Lawrence, but was swept in a pair of lopsided Saturday matchups with MWC foe Monmouth and Greenville. The Bucs will play Cornell College Wednesday.

Cross Country Penciled In at UW-W Open

The Mount Mary cross country squad has faced some setbacks this season, but are tentatively slated to compete at the Warhawk Open Friday afternoon in Whitewater. The Blue Angels have not raced since its lone appearance of the 2021 season at the Ken Weidt Classic back on September 11.
