This Week in Blue Angel Athletics - October 25, 2021

Regular seasons come to a close for volleyball and soccer, while cross country heads to NACC Championship in This Week in Blue Angel Athletics for Oct. 25-31.

Volleyball off to Weekend WLC Invite

The MMU volleyball squad will end its regular season as close to home as possible with a four-match slate at Wisconsin Lutheran College Friday and Saturday. The Blue Angels will battle the Bluejays of Elmhurst College at 5 p.m. Friday before challenging Concordia-Chicago at 7 p.m. Saturday MMU takes on MSOE and Carroll.

Mount Mary (7-18 overall) went 1-2 at its MMU Autumn Classic last weekend, beating longtime rival Maranatha Baptist University for the first time in school history. Additionally, MMU fell to Calumet College of St. Joseph and Beloit College over the two-day quad.

Sophomore Brianna Ecker (Fond du Lac, Wis./Stockbridge)and junior Aislinn Strusz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led MMU on both sides of the ball over the weekend. Ecker averaged 3.5 kills and four digs while Strusz added 3.08 kills and 3.75 digs per set.

Elmhurst (14-11, 6-2 CCIW) held off North Central last week Wednesday, then split its weekend with a victory over Grinnell before falling to host Chicago University on Saturday… Concordia Chicago (10-15, 3-9 NACC) had a great weekend, sweeping Alverno Friday before surprising Edgewood Saturday, 23-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 15-13… MSOE (19-10, 8-4) was swept by league leader Aurora Friday but remained in the hunt for a NACC Tournament quarterfinal berth with a Saturday win over Rockford. The Raiders can clinch with a Wednesday win over preseason favorite Concordia Wisconsin… Carroll (6-18, 0-7 CCIW) is looking to snap a four-match losing streak, having fallen to CCIW foes Augustana Wednesday and North Park Saturday.

Soccer to host duo of C2C Comrades

Mount Mary soccer welcomes a pair of Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foes for a C2C Tournament tune-up this weekend at MMU Soccer Field. MMU will host Finlandia University Friday, Finlandia will play Mills College (Calif.) on Saturday, and MMU will play Mills on Sunday. Games on all three days are slated for 1 p.m. starts.

Mount Mary (0-13-1 overall) dropped a pair of 2-0 decisions last week, falling to Maranatha Baptist University Tuesday and at Eureka College Sunday. The Blue Angels were outshot 15-3 and 16-1 in those matchups while freshman Brianna Brown (San Diego, Calif./Herbert Hoover) recorded five and nine saves, respectively.

Finlandia (5-9-1) hosted a pair of southwestern Wisconsin foes in Viterbo University and University of Wisconsin-Platteville this past weekend, also falling 2-0 in both contests. The Lions have already beaten MMU, 9-0, earlier this season in Hancock… Mills (1-7) has not played since October 13 in the second of a two-game series with another C2C opponent, University of California-Santa Cruz. The Cyclones, who are scheduled to play Pacific Union Wednesday, have scored just one goal on the year, that coming in a 1-0 win over Cal Maritime.

Cross Country Scheduled for NACC Championship

Cross Country is scheduled to take to the campus course at Concordia Wisconsin for Saturday's NACC Championship race. The women's 6K race is scheduled for a noon start time.
