Blue Angels Fall to Falcons on the Road

MEQUON, Wis. – After another week of washed out games, the Mount Mary softball squad returned to action Monday night at Concordia University-Wisconsin, falling to the host Falcons in a double-header 23-1 and 16-3.

The losses drop the Blue Angels to 0-8 on the year, while CUW improves to 22-10 overall.

Game one began with a difficult first inning in the circle, as the Falcons posted a 12-run home half of the stanza, before adding three more in the second. Concordia's pitcher was dominant on the mound, as Mount Mary struggled at the plate. Finally in the third inning, a walk issued to senior Emily Barker (Oconomowoc, Wis.) was followed up by a double off the centerfield fence by senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.), breaking up the no-hitter for CUW. However, it would be the only hit the Blue Angels could muster as they fell in game one, 23-1.

The Blue Angel offense was revived in the second game of the night, as Barker singled past the second baseman and Wolk added her second deep shot to center. Junior Nicole Ordway (Republic, Wash.) scored Barker on a fielder's choice to the right side to put the first run of the game on the board. Senior Ashley Leverenz (Mauston, Wis.) reached on an error by the CUW shortstop, scoring Wolk from third, tallying two runs on two hits and an error.

The great start was quickly answered by the Falcons, whose leadoff batter, who was walked, reached third base after just six pitches. After CUW plated two runs, a sharp grounder was misplayed by Mount Mary, lengthening the inning considerably. When the smoke cleared, Concordia had answered with eight runs on four hits and two Blue Angel errors.

Mount Mary threatened again in the fourth inning as Ordway led off with a homerun to center field, her second homer of the year. Leverenz followed up with a shot to third, beating the throw for her first hit of the day. Yet Mount Mary would not score again, falling 16-3 in another five-inning contest.

Mount Mary will remain on the road tomorrow, traveling to downtown Milwaukee with a delayed date with Milwaukee School of Engineering. Game times for the double header contest will begin at 3:00 p.m.

SCHEDULE NOTES: While last week's slate of games against Wisconsin Lutheran, Maranatha Baptist and MSOE were cancelled, Mount Mary will add a home double-header against Cardinal Stritch University on Friday, April 26. A make-up home contest against MSOE will also take place Sunday, April 28, and the once season-opening double-header against Rockford will become the season finale, May 1.
