Regents Rock Mount Mary in Home Softball Finale

WAUWATOSA, Wis. – Mount Mary wrapped up its compacted home schedule Wednesday at Hart Park, dropping a pair of outings against Rockford College, 12-1 and 15-0. The losses, both coming in a shortened five innings, drop the Blue Angels to 0-18 on the year.

After giving up a run in the first, Mount Mary threatened in the home half of the inning with senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.) and sophomore Katie Edwards (Mackinaw, Ill.) each receiving one-out walks. But the Regents were able to retain the lead after a flyout and a strikeout. Rockford would bat around in the second, pushing five runs across on seven hits, and added another run in the fourth to race out to a 7-0 lead.

The Blue Angel bats awoke in the fourth, as Edwards started things off with a single to left-center. Junior Nicole Ordway reached on a fielder's choice force-out at second to wipe Edwards off the base path, but a clutch RBI single to center by senior Ashley Leverenz (Mauston, Wis.) and an incredibly athletic slide from Ordway broke the scoring drought. Unfortunately, it was all Mount Mary could create offensively as Rockford added five more runs in the fifth to force the run-rule, 12-1.

The Regents used great patience at the plate in game two, pouring out 14 runs on just nine hits in the first three innings alone. In turn, Mount Mary was held hitless until the fourth inning when Wolk and Ordway both punched one through the left side. Leverenz added a single to left in the fifth, but the Blue Angels were shut out for the eighth time this year, falling 15-0.

Mount Mary concludes its season against MSOE Friday in a double-header scheduled for 3 p.m. in downtown Milwaukee. Friday's double-header will also be the teams' Strikeout Cancer games, raising money for respective cancer research foundations.
