FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Mount Mary University softball team got off to a rough start in Day 1 of its slate at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic Monday, dropping an 11-0 decision to Franklin & Marshall University (Pa.) before being routed by Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) 25-0.

In each game the Blue Angels managed just one hit offensively. In the opener against the Diplomats, sophomore Nicole Weggen (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) hit a Texas-leaguer up the right field line in the top of the fourth. While it was actually Weggen's second time on base in the game, having been beaned in the leg in the first inning, MMU batters couldn't get her over to second base in either instance.

The Angels struggled at the plate again against the Ducks of SIT, before junior Katie Edwards (Mackinaw, Ill.) broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the fourth inning. She would eventually reach third base on a wild pitch and an ensuing past ball, but would be stranded there to end the inning.

At the end of the day, six Blue Angels were left on base (three in each game) while opposing Diplomat and Duck pitchers racked up 17 strikeouts against MMU batters.

Edwards took both losses in the circle Monday as well, falling to 0-3 overall in four appearances from the pitching rubber.

The Blue Angels will be back in action Tuesday, where they face Ohio Wesleyan University and Mount Saint Mary's University at the Cape Coral Sports Center. Game times are 9:00 am and 11:00 am respectively, both also in Eastern Time.
