Softball completes Gene Cusic Classic run

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Blue Angel softball team wrapped up its competition schedule at the Gene Cusic Classic, dropping both games on its Thursday slate. Mount Mary was no-hit against SUNY-Oneonta (N.Y.) in a 20-0 romp, then fell 11-0 to Drew University (N.J.)—both games ending after five innings.

Exhausted minds and bodies seemed to be the theme entering Thursday's matchups as the MMU offense was still vacationing on the beach.

Mount Mary sent the minimum of 15 batters to the plate against Oneonta State, as only sophomore Tracy Boutell (Brown Deer, Wis.) reached base after getting hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second inning. She would be thrown out trying to steal third on the ensuing pitch, as the Red Dragon tandem of pitchers racked up nine strikeouts.

It was a similar story in game two against the Rangers of Drew University, as nine more Angels were disposed of with a "K" in the scorebook.

Senior Katie Wolk (Oshkosh, Wis.) tallied the only hit of the day for Mount Mary, a driven ball up the left field line in the top of the third inning. She would advance to second on a passed ball, but be stranded by two straight Mount Mary strikeouts to end the inning.

Edwards completed her eight-straight games of pitching in four days, taking both losses again Thursday in a valiant effort in the circle. While her numbers may not be terribly impressive, to get through the week as the only pitcher on staff was quite a feat in and of itself.

The Angels will officially be off until next Saturday, when a triangular is scheduled with Dominican and Northland College on March 22.

Should the field miraculously thaw and dry out in time, Mount Mary will play its first ever game at Kulwicki Park at Noon against the Stars. Dominican will play Northland in the 2:30 matchup, and MMU and the Lumberjills will finish off the day at 5:00 p.m.
