OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Mount Mary University junior pitcher/catcher Katie Edwards (Mackinaw, Ill.) has been awarded the Association of Division III Independents softball Player of the Week for March 31-April 6, 2014.

Edwards had a stellar week for the Blue Angels at the dish, batting .375 (6-for-16) with two homers and 10 RBI as she helped lead Mount Mary to the program's first win since April 27, 2012.

Despite being held hitless against a much-improved MSOE team, the team captain responded with clutch hitting in doubleheaders against Rockford University and Maranatha Baptist University. The junior finished the twinbill at Rockford going 3-for-5, driving in both of the team's runs in the nightcap and threw six strong innings in the circle in game two, allowing only two earned runs.

Edwards capped off the week with an impressive showing against the Crusaders, going 3-for-7 with two long balls, eight RBI and three runs scored, while also recording a season-high five punchouts in the circle as the Blue Angels secured the sweep.

Edwards is the second straight Mount Mary softball player to earn the AD3I P.O.W. Award, last winning it on May 6 of last year.

She joins soccer player Emily Ristow (Oct. 22) and the inaugural AD3I tennis P.O.W. and current softball teammate Katie Wolk (Sept. 24) as Blue Angels to win the weekly award in this school year.
