This Week in Blue Angel Athletics

TENNIS TEAM VIES FOR NCAA TOURNAMENT BID

For the first time in program history, the Mount Mary tennis team will play for a berth in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. With an invitation to the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament this upcoming weekend, the Blue Angels would earn the league’s automatic qualifying bid should they take home the tournament title.

The tournament, hosted by Agnes Scott College, will be played on the courts of Georgia Tech University. Eight teams from six states will converge upon Atlanta for the competition, representing California, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin.

It has been a record-breaking year for Mount Mary (6-5), who will look to make it even more memorable with a strong finish in Atlanta. Full tournament seedings and schedules will be released Monday afternoon.

SOFTBALL WRAPS UP SEASON

The Mount Mary softball team (3-25) will complete its original season schedule this week with a pair of local double-headers.

Wednesday, the Blue Angels travel downtown to take on Milwaukee School of Engineering (18-14) for a 3:30 p.m. start. The Raiders have improved immensely from last season when they went 7-28 overall.

MSOE cruised in the teams’ first matchups this season, winning 14-0, 13-0 in a pair of five-inning games.

Wednesday’s games will also be the second annual Strikeout Cancer night for the two teams, who continue to raise money for various local cancer research programs.

Friday, the Blue Angels will host their final game at Kulwicki Park this season, playing familiar foe Maranatha Baptist University (2-17) at 3 p.m. Mount Mary has won three of the four matchups this season in double-digit fashion while the Crusaders earned a 12-7 victory in Watertown last weekend.
