Miscues Hurt Blue Angels

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – On another sweltering day, the Mount Mary University Blue Angels (2-8) dropped two games Thursday March 12th at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. Game one was a 10-2 loss to Nazareth College (3-5) and game two saw a 12-0 loss to Suffolk University (2-2).

In the first contest, the Blue Angels ran into some hot bats as the opposing Nazareth Golden Flyers blasted three doubles and brought home two runs. The second inning, the Blue Angels gave up some early errors, and with the coupling of seven hits by Nazareth, MMU found themselves in a 9-0 hole early.

The Blue Angels began to rally in the fourth, pulling in two runs off of a pair of hits by Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas) and Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.). Payton Hintz (Fr./Almond, Wis.) had the only RBI of the day for the Blue Angels in the top of the fourth, but that was where the bats started to go silent for MMU. After the spark, the Golden Flyers added one more in the fifth inning to end the game early.

During the second game, the Blue Angels again gave up a big inning where the Suffolk Rams scored seven runs off of seven hits. The only hit of the game for MMU came off of the bat of Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) on a deep hit ball to right center.

After giving up five unearned runs in the top of the fourth, the Blue Angels could not get back in rhythm and the game would end after just five innings.

"Our pitchers are beating themselves out there getting some playable balls, but we just aren't backing them up and making the outs." Coach Tim Edwards continued, "…just mental mistakes again. I know we are capable of a lot better."

The Blue Angels will try to get things going in a hurry, as they have only one more doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Friday March 13th. Game one will pit the Blue Angels up against Salem State (0-0) at 8:00 am CST. Following that, the Blue Angels will wrap up their trip against Geneva College (3-3) with first pitch at 10:00 am CST.
