Blue Angels Bounce Back

Blue Angels Bounce Back

DEERFIELD, Ill. – The Mount Mary University softball team split games with Trinity International University Saturday April 4th at the Trojans home field.

In game one of the double header, the Blue Angels took the lead early. After a two out double by Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.), Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) ripped a single down the left field line to give MMU the lead in the top of the first.

The Trojans took the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning when freshman Alyssa Doomis hit a two-run homerun. After the TIU added 11 runs in the bottom of the third off of 10 hits and four Blue Angels fielding errors, the Trojans cruised to a 15-2 victory in five innings.

A solo homerun by Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas) was the offensive highlight of the first game; the rookie's first collegiate homerun. Nikki Festge (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) was credited with the complete game loss.

It was a big inning one that gave the Blue Angels the lead in game two, and a lead that MMU would never surrender. With the bases juiced and one out in the first, Payton Hintz (Fr./Almond, Wis.) got the hardest RBI a player can get when she was hit by a pitch after battling in an eight pitch at-bat. After another walk, and a two RBI single by Michelle Argenzio (Jr./Brookfield, Wis.) gave MMU a 4-0 lead.

The Blue Angels added to the lead in the top half of the fourth, as Katie Edwards hit her first homerun of the season, while adding to her team leading 13 RBIs.

The Trojans added two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, and supplied a bit of a scare to close out the game. With the score 6-4, TIU had a runner at second with the tying run at the plate and two outs, but Ashley Contreras finished the complete game for her second win of the season.

Following Saturday's split, the Blue Angels (3-15) will get ready for a big homestretch as they have three doubleheaders in the next week. The first of which will be against Lawrence University (9-5) on Tuesday April 7th with game one of the doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm in Greenfield, Wis. at Kulwicki Park.

Box scores will be released shortly.
