Vikings Take Two Against MMU

Vikings Take Two Against MMU

GREENFIELD, Wis. – In another cold spring day, the Mount Mary University softball team lost both of their games against Lawrence University (12-6). The Blue Angels (3-17) lost the doubleheader at Kulwicki Park on Tuesday.

Temperatures were low again for the Blue Angels home doubleheader starting at 39 degrees for the first pitch. Combating a tough offense, MMU had trouble keeping up with the Vikings hot bats in the first game. LU smashed 13 hits in the game and had 11 runners cross the plate by the third inning.

Nikki Festge (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) went five innings and got the complete game surrendering eight earned runs four of which came off a pair of homeruns by Amanda Jaskolski for LU.

MMU's offense in game one was fueled by Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) as she had two of the four hits for her team.

Game two sparked a bit more offense for the Blue Angels, but the errors in the second game would be too much for MMU to overcome. In the top of the fifth, the errors really added up as the four miscues led to seven runs, all of which were unearned.

Offensively the Blue Angels mustered one run off of seven hits, Edwards again led the offense going 2-3 at the plate with the lone MMU RBI.

Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) chipped in by going 2-2 with a run scored.

Molly Peck (Fr./Milwaukee, Wis.) was inches away from her first collegiate homerun, but the winds knocked down the long shot and held the infielder to a long single. Peck also went 2-2 with a double.

Although the Blue Angels put together more offense, the 14 hits and four MMU errors led Lawrence to a 13-1 victory in five innings; Ashley Contreras (Fr./College Station, Texas) was pegged with the loss.

Following Tuesday's games, the Blue Angels will face Lakeland College Thursday April 9th at Kulwicki Park in Greenfield, Wis. First pitch of the doubleheader between MMU and the Muskies will be at 3:00 pm.
