Big Weekend For Blue Angels Softball

Big Weekend For Blue Angels Softball

The Mount Mary University softball team has a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. The first doubleheader for the Blue Angels (3-17) will come against Maranatha Baptist University (1-12) on April 11th beginning at 12:00 pm. Both games on Saturday will be played at Alverno College's softball field.

These two Association of Division III Independents rivals have gone head to head a lot since the Blue Angels NCAA era. At this point in the all-time series, the teams are deadlocked at 8-8. Last season the teams played six times, and in true rivalry fashion they split 3-3.

The Blue Angels had some of their biggest production against MBU last year. Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) had big production against the Sabercats last season, going 6-14 at the plate with eight BB, 11 RBIs, and four homeruns. Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) also had a big series against MBU, going 9-17 in her at-bats while drawing five walks and bringing home five RBIs.

This year, the Blue Angels have been stepping up their game in both the batter's box and in the pitching circle. The team ERA has been nearly slashed in half from last season with this year's team ERA at 8.01. With twelve games left in the season, the Blue Angels have already surpassed the total team hits from last year's full season. And with nearly a third of the season left to play, the Blue Angels have scored 50 percent more runs than the full 2014 season.

MMU will be looking to keep up their big time production against their AD3I rivals, but the Sabercats are looking to snap their 10 game losing streak.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Blue Angels, as they will have to go up against Lakeland College the very next day. The April 12th doubleheader against the Muskies will also be held at Alverno College's softball field and will begin at 1:00 pm.

The last time the Muskies (6-18) played the Blue Angels was in 2012, when the Muskies won both games with a combined score of 30-2. The only Blue Angel still on the roster from that series is Katie Edwards, who went 1 for 3 at the plate with a run scored.

Following this weekend's home stand, the Blue Angels will head across town to play the Milwaukee School of Engineering on the Raiders campus. The doubleheader is set for Thursday April 16th beginning at 3:30 pm.
