Crosstown Battle For Blue Angels

Crosstown Battle For Blue Angels

As the season winds down, the Mount Mary University softball team is getting ready for a quick trip to battle the Milwaukee School of Engineering (10-18). The Blue Angels (5-19) will go up against the Raiders in a doubleheader on Thursday April 16th with first pitch at 3:30 pm.

MMU has another big test before their final stretch of the season. The Raiders are slowing down a little bit as of late, losing their last eight straight, but the recent slip in wins has not effected much of the Raiders batting as the team is hitting .280 on the year. When adding that to the team's 3.91 ERA, it is hard to believe the team has been on an extended losing streak.

The Blue Angels are 3-5 in their last eight games, and have put together some huge offensive stretches recently. The most notable outburst would be against Maranatha Baptist University. In one of the doubleheaders on April 11th, the Blue Angels launched back-to-back-to-back homeruns. MMU defeated the Sabercats in both games of the doubleheader, and with a combined score of 23-7.

The issue for Mount Mary this season has been the fielding errors. The Blue Angels have had no more than three errors in every victory in 2015. In the last six losses for MMU, the team has averaged over five errors per game. The line between victory and defeat for the Blue Angels might just be the difference of 2.2 errors per game.

Some lineup changes have seen some big improvements for MMU hitters. Nicole Weggen (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) just launched her second homerun of the season, and has her batting average at .351, good enough for sixth in the Association of Division III Independents; Weggen has an OBP of .456 fifth in AD3I.

Right behind her is Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) who just launched three homeruns in her last four games. Edwards leads the AD3I in homers with 4, and is second in the AD3I in both BA and OBP, .431 and .486 respectively.

Following the Raiders, the Blue Angels will have another game on the road as they continue their season series with Maranatha Baptist University. The game will be in Watertown, Wis. on April 18th with first pitch of the doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
