MMU Softball Finale Friday

MMU Softball Finale Friday

The Mount Mary University softball team is getting ready to close out the 2015 season. As the softball year comes to an end, the Blue Angels (8-22) have the Maranatha Baptist University Sabercats (1-22) in their sights. The two will clash on the diamond Friday April 24th with the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.

Over the last three seasons, the Blue Angels have been going through a complete reform. The 2012 season ended as the best MMU single season since joining the NCAA ranks going 9-22. Following an almost complete transformation in a year, the program was close to not being able to complete the season until coach Tim Edwards stepped up to take the reins for the last portion of the 2013 season were MMU finished 0-19.

The 2014 season saw big change in culture and dedication across the board. The Blue Angels completed the year with three players making various All-Association of Division III Independents teams, split the season series with AD3I rival Maranatha Baptist University.

This season, Coach Edwards and the dedicated Blue Angels have gotten the program back on track, battling with nationally renowned programs, cutting down on ERAs, seeing a serious increase in hits and RBIs, and it all led to a chance for the Blue Angels to surpass that single season win record.

The team standing in the way is familiar AD3I rival MBU. The Blue Angels are 4-0 against the Sabercats this season, and also lead the NCAA era series 12-8. Most recently MMU defeated Maranatha Baptist in a comeback victory that saw the Blue Angels score six runs in the top of the seventh to win 6-5.

There were more late inning heroics in the Blue Angels last victory against Rockford University, where Katie Edwards (Sr./Mackinaw, Ill.) blasted her first collegiate walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh.

As the Blue Angels continue to grow and progress as a team, they have a good opportunity to show their success by taking a school record on the way. The stage is set and the Blue Angels are roaring to go for the 2015 season finale.
