Pioneers Pickup a Pair

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Mount Mary University softball team lost both games to host Grinnell College today at the Grinnell Softball Complex. The Pioneers took the first game 17-5 then followed up by taking the second game 8-0, both finished in five innings. The losses give the Blue Angels a 2-8 record while moving the Pioneers to 8-5.

In game one, the Pioneers started off with a big first inning. Scoring nine runs in the opening frame, the Blue Angels quickly turned around and put a dent in that lead scoring three of their own runs in the top of the second.

Two of those runs came courtesy of a Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) double on a liner to center field, with two outs, the runners were off and running on the pitch, which gave outfielder Shandrieka Richardson (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) ample time to score from second.

The Pioneers responded by adding six runs in the bottom half of the second inning and stretching out the lead even further.

Peyton Davis (Fr./Tracy, Calif.) led of the fifth and final inning with a single to right field. Payton Hintz (So./Almond, Wis.) then sparked the team hitting a deep shot for MMU's first homerun of the season.

Davis led the Blue Angels charge in the first game with a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate with an RBI and a stolen base. Nikki Festge (Sr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) was pegged with the lose making her 1-4 on the year.

Game two saw the Pioneers take the lead in the first inning off a pair of singles. The Blue Angels got out of a small jam with an inning ending double play to get out of the first.

Taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Pioneers added five more runs off of five hits and two triples.

Michelle Argenzio (Sr./Brookfield, Wis.) led the Blue Angels offense in the second game going 2-of-2 from the plate including MMU's only double of the game.

The Blue Angels will head home before preparing to host their first home game of the season. MMU will face Trinity International Sat. Apr. 2 with starting times of 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Live video and live stats will be available at mtmaryathletics.com. Box scores will be available shortly.
