Trojans Take Two

WHEELING, Ill. – The Mount Mary University softball team lost both games in their doubleheader against Trinity International today at Heritage Park. The Trojans took game one 5-1, then defeated MMU 9-1 in sixing innings in the second game of the day.

Haley Smalley (Jr./Columbus, Ind.) started for the Blue Angels in the circle in game one. Smalley went all 6.0 innings in the day's opener. The Trojans were able to get on the board early in the bottom half of the first. TIU scored two runs on a groundout to shortstop and a single to left center. The single was one of three hits given up in the frame.

The Trojans added two more in bottom half of the third inning on four base hits. Both runs were scored via an RBI-single to left center, the latter of the two was of the two-out variety and stretched the score to 4-0.

Outside of a single from Taylor Hienbuecher (Fr./Sycamore, Ill.) in the second inning, the Blue Angels offense was stifled until the top of the fourth. After Adrianna Nester (Jr./Anaheim, Calif.) stole second base, Haley Smalley delivered at the plate with a one-out single to left center which scored the Blue Angels only RBI of the game making it 4-1.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Trojans added one more run on a two-out single to right field. MMU was able to add a base runner in the top of the seventh inning after Amelia Flint (Sr./Whitefish Bay, Wis.) laced a single to center field, but the game would end 5-1.

Flint led the offense at the plate going 1-of-2 at the plate with a walk. Smalley finished 1-of-3 with an RBI.

Smalley was given the loss on the rubber today after surrendering five earned runs off 10 hits and one strikeout.

In game two on the day, TIU attacked again in the first inning. This time, Nester got the start at pitcher. The Trojans scored their first run of the game without recording a hit after four consecutive walks made the score 1-0. TIU added four more runs in the inning off one hit and one error making things 5-0 after one completed.

The Trojans added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning on after a single scored a pair of runners in scoring position.

Adrianna Nester got her team going in the top portion of the fourth inning when she cracked a one-out triple to right center field. The next at-bat, Taylor Hienbuecher cracked a sacrifice fly to center field to score Nester and make the score 6-1.

In bottom of the sixth inning, the Trojans collected three hits and a walk. On the third hit of the inning, TIU stretched the score to 9-1 and forced the eight-run rule to end the game.

Nester finished the complete game on the rubber and was dealt the loss in the decision. She surrendered nine runs, eight earned runs, off eight hits while striking out five batters.

Nester collected the only extra base hit of the day for the Blue Angels. Teammate Amelia Flint led game two for MMU at the plate going 2-of-2.
