Blue Angels sweep Lawrence

Blue Angels sweep Lawrence

Appleton, WI - The Mount Mary softball team traveled to Appleton take on the Vikings of Lawrence University on Monday.  The Blue Angels got off to a fast start, never let up offensively, and took game one by a final score of 10-6.  Brianna Lupa pitched a complete game for her sixth win of the season.  Offensively, Marissa Heraly had 2 hits and three runs batted in.  Sam Allen also had two base knocks for Mount Mary in the game one win.

In game 2, a lead off double by Sam Allen and a sac fly by Mary DeFore put the Blue Angels up 1-0 in the first inning.  Mount Mary struck again in the top of the 3rd, Kaylee Baker started the rally, Mary DeFore knocked in a run and the Blue Angels took a 3-0 lead.  Offensively, MMU continued to add on, and Elyse DeGraef was stellar in the pitching circle and Blue Angels took game 2 by a score of 6-0.   The complete game shutout was the first for DeGraef.

Offensive standouts in game 2 for Mount Mary were Sam Allen and Naomi Gomez with 3 hits each.  Mary DeFore knocked in two runs also for MMU.

Head Coach Perry Clark commented on the day's action, "Today was more like the offensive team that I thought we had and think we can be.   We wanted them to start the game strong and aggressive at the plate.  Our defense played well most of the game but got a little sloppy the sixth and seventh.   We decided to mix the lineup a little and see if that would create some spark and it sure did.   Bri Lupa isnt 100% yet - groin injury but she did a nice job keeping the ball low.

Clark continued, "Elise pitched her best game ever in game 2, going the distance and allowing no runs.  She really kept the hitters off balance and our defense stepped up and supported her.

Sometimes you worry about the offensive going a little cold after scoring lots of runs in game one but they really did a nice job again.  I felt our only mistake was leaving to many on base in scoring position but at least we had runners on base."

The Blue Angels (7-20) will next be in action on Thursday, April 13th.  Mount Mary will travel across town to take on the Alverno College Inferno.  Doubleheader game times are scheduled for 3 and 5 pm and all live coverage can be found on www.mtmaryathletics.com
