Sunday Split vs Alverno

Sunday Split vs Alverno

Glendale, WI- The Mount Mary Blue Angel softball team came into Sunday's doubleheader against Alverno College having won seven of their last ten games.  Mount Mary won game one in thrilling fashion by a 4-2 score, Alverno bounced back and won game two by a 15-3 score, as the teams split the doubleheader on the day.

Game one was an almost even game throughout.  Brianna Lupa was strong in the circle but Alverno's pitching and defense held steady as well.  With the game tied in the 5th, a Sam Allen run scoring single put MMU ahead 2-1.  Alverno answered with a single run in the top of the 6th to even the contest once again.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Blue Angels once again came through.  A sacrifice fly by Jodie Penman and run scoring single by Micaela Gonzalez staked MMU to a 4-2 lead.  Brianna Lupa would finish the complete game victory in the 7th.  Lupa continues as the Mount Mary all-time leader in wins, strikeouts, earned run average and complete games.  Lupa fanned seven hitters while only walking two.  The 4-2 win in game one was the 8th in 11 games for Mount Mary.

Offensively, Sam Allen was 2-3 and Alexandria Eads, Penman and Gonzales joined her with runs batted in.

In game two, the teams were scoreless until Alverno scored 5 runs in the top of the 3rd.  MMU would answer with a single run in the bottom of the 3rd.  The Inferno offense came back with three in the top of the 4th.  Training 8-1, Mount Mary would rally for 2 in the bottom of the 5th.

Alverno grabbed the two runs back in the top of the 6th and led 10-3.  Alverno would control things from that point forward for the 15-3 victory.

The Blue Angels had 10 hits in game 2, with Alexandria Eads and Jodie Penman with two each.  Kaylee Baker paced Mount Mary with two runs batted in.

Mount Mary (9-20) will have a busy week ahead with six road games.  They will begin Tuesday, April 23rd, when they head to Ripon College for a doubleheader with games at 3 and 5 pm.  Stay tuned to www.mtmaryathletics.com for all coverage of Blue Angel softball.
