ASHLAND, Wis. – The Mount Mary University basketball team successfully endured the nearly six-hour drive from Milwaukee's west side to the shores of Lake Superior.
Unfortunately for the Blue Angels, a rough night on both ends of the floor all evening spelled disaster as host Northland College dominated Mount Mary 54-39 Thursday evening at Kendrigan Gymnasium.
Offensively, the Angels missed several easy looks inside and shot a dismal 29.6 percent from the floor on 16-for-54 shooting. Also looking rather uninspired on defense, MMU allowed Northland to earn 17 second chance points off 19 offensive rebounds to the Lumberjills.
Senior guard Emily Barker (Oconomowoc, Wis.) led Mount Mary with 12 points—the only Angel to breach the double-figure scoring mark. She also added eight rebounds and a pair of steals to her night.
Senior forward Ashley Leverenz (Mauston, Wis.) tallied nine points and nine rebounds, snapping her two-game double-double streak. Sophomores Yolanda Coleman (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Doni Yendriga (Conneaut, Ohio) each added eight points in the loss.
Mount Mary, which won its first game of the year Wednesday night in Milwaukee, looked a bit sluggish compared to the host 'Jills, despite the Angels' jumping out to an early 4-0 lead to start the game. Northland slowly responded by working the ball inside, closing the half on a 18-5 run to take a 26-15 lead into the break.
The second half saw the 'Jills come out firing, pushing their lead to 46-22 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game and never looked back.
The Blue Angels will have a chance to make better Saturday afternoon as they head northeastward to Hancock, Mich., to take on Finlandia University. The Lions, who beat Northland College 98-56 earlier in the week, are 5-10 overall on the season.

The Blue Angels will regroup and return to action Saturday afternoon at Finlandia University in Hancock, Mich.
