Highlanders Get Away From Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary University could not defend the Bloechl as the Blue Angels lost to MacMurray College 58-38. The Highlanders are now 5-12, and the loss knocks MMU down to 3-13 on the 2015 campaign.

From the tip, the Highlanders attacked inside the paint. The first five buckets for MacMurray were layups in the paint as they quickly jumped out to a 10-2 lead. MMU came fighting back in the first, but could only hit 4 of 23 field goals in the first. The teams checked into the locker-rooms at 30-12 in favor of the Highlanders.

As the halftime chalk-talk sunk into the MMU lineup, they came out as a different team in the second. Hitting the extra pass, closing out hard on the opposition, and taking care of the ball, the Blue Angels battled the final 20 minutes. The discipline by the Blue Angels yielded a better half, but MacMurray held onto the lead.

A big finish for Jasmine Meyer (Fr./Lansing, Kan.) as she finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds, and a personal collegiate high of four blocks; only 3 points for Meyer in the first half. Another game in which the rookie has taken more minutes on the floor and turned it into a great individual performance.

Coming off the bench, Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) put up 13 points and tore down 8 rebounds. The youngster has been flirting with a double-double nearly every night, averaging a team leading 12.8 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Coach Marc Heidorf made some big adjustments at half, and despite a slow start, the coach found some bright spots.

"I thought defensively we showed some things on the positive side that we have not all year. Offensively, their zone defense and their half-court trap was able to keep us out of our comfort zone for the balance of the game, and that was the difference."

Now the Blue Angels look ahead to next Wednesday Feb. 4th at 7:00 pm. MMU will play host to Illinois Institute of Technology at the Bloechl Center.
