Blue Angels Soar Over Scarlet Hawks

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Blue Angels defeated visiting Illinois Tech 58-25. The plus 33 point differential is the largest margin of victory for MMU this season, in fact, this is the largest margin for victory since a plus 37 margin against Northland International in 2011. The win moves the Blue Angels to 4-11 (0-1) while making Illinois Tech 0-20 on the season.

The Blue Angels came out with a hot first quarter again scoring 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-7 from the 3-point line. After a 22-5 quarter in favor of MMU, the Blue Angels added 14 in the second quarter while holding IIT to 6.

With a 36-11 lead at half, the Blue Angels spread the offensive sets and worked for the best shot. Scoring 22 in the final 20 minutes, MMU took the lopsided 58-25 victory.

"We talked pregame about getting off to a quick start." Head Coach Marc Heidorf explained, "We were able to do it against Moody [Bible Institute] and we were able to do it tonight. It makes all the difference in the world to start up big. If we are going to win for the rest of the season, we are going to needed the spread out contributions like we got tonight. The biggest difference in our last few wins this year is that big start."

Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) continued to attack the hoop and drive her team offensively as she scored 16 with six rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a game leading seven steals.

A breakout game for Ariel Oviedo (Jr./Shawano, Wis.) as she notched her first double-double of the season with 12 points, 10 rebounds and dished out a game high eight assists. Teammate Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.) led the game with 19 points and two blocks while adding five rebounds and three steals.

Hailey Borowczyk led the Scarlet Hawks with nine points and seven rebounds.

As a team, the Blue Angels shot a season high 29 free throws while knocking down 18. The 15 team steals ties the season high for 2015-16.

Following tonight's game, the Blue Angels will get ready to host Silver Lake. The Lakers come to town Thur. Feb. 11. The tipoff at the Bloechl Center is set for 6:00 pm. Live stats and live video at mtmaryathletics.com.
