PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Today at the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament, the Mount Mary University women's basketball team lost to host Lakeland University 84-42. Now 1-1 on the young season, the Blue Angels will await the results of game two of the tournament to find out their opponent for tomorrow's game.
Keeping the game within striking distance the entire first half, the Blue Angels found themselves down 5-1 early after Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) hit a free throw knocking the zero off the score board for MMU. After that the Muskie went on a 13-3 run.
Lakeland (1-1) won the first quarter 24-11 making 9-of-18 from the floor and forcing MMU to seven turnovers in the quarter. Onan led the offensive charge with scoring five points after making 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
The Blue Angels turned the tables in the second quarter shooting 7-of-15 from the floor and holding their opponent to a team .40 field goal percentage. The Blue Angels also forced eight turnovers in the quarter as they applied the defensive pressure all ten minutes. Senior Ariel Oviedo (Shawano, Wis.) led the quarter in steals with three.
Jess Runge's (Sr./Freedom, Wis.) six points in the second quarter kept the Blue Angels within thirteen at halftime.
Coming out in a trapping press for most of the second half, the Muskies separated the score in the final 20 minutes. Lakeland generated eight steals in the third quarter and outscored MMU 28-4.
In the final quarter, the Blue Angels applied more defensive pressure themselves and forced the Muskies to six more turnovers as Oviedo swiped three more steals in the final frame.
Onan led the offense with 10 points and chipped in two steals and two blocks on defense. Teammate Oviedo provide eight points with six steals and a team high five rebounds.
"Second quarter where we cut deficit in half was more indicative of what we are capable of," Mount Mary Head Basketball Coach Marc Heidorf said, "To Lakeland's credit, they were able to play at that level for four quarters to our one."
The Blue Angels will now wait for the outcome of game two of the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament to find out who they will face in the consolation game.
