Sabres Strike For Win

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Today at the Howard L. Sadoff Gymnasium, host Marian University (2-2) defeated the Mount Mary University basketball team by a score of 54-40. The Sabres and Blue Angels (0-3) traded baskets for the majority of the first half, but Marian was able to take a third quarter lead to the end of regulation for the Sabre victory.

Trading shots, and playing solid defense on both sides, neither team was able to get the offense started until two minutes into the first quarter. The Sabres grabbed the early 6-5 lead, but Becky Onan (Sr./Grafton, Wis.) responded with a timely offensive rebound and then a pair of free throws to give her team the 7-6 lead six minutes into the contest.

The Sabres took the lead back with three minutes left to go in the first quarter with a Brandi Bender jump shot. Marian finished the quarter ahead of the Blue Angels 12-9.

In the second quarter, the Sabres came out with a 5-0 run that lasted nearly five minutes long. That is when Kaylie Cook (Fr./Fairborn, Ohio) started the Blue Angels 5-0 run that left Marian scoreless for over four minutes. Each team knocked down a jump shot before the end of the half to make things 19-16 with the Sabres in the lead.

The Blue Angels made 8-of-12 free throws in the first half and ripped away seven team steals as well.

In the second half, the Blue Angels continued to attack and get to the free throw line, hitting 10-of-16. The Sabres, however, continued to shoot effectively as they hit 48.4 percent from the field in the second half.

MMU bounced back offensively in the fourth quarter scoring 18 with Brooke Uebersetzig (So./Greenwood, Ind.) scoring six of those points. The Sabres matched with 21 points of their own to give Marian the 54-40 win.

"We took some steps forward defensively tonight and a couple back offensively unfortunately," said Mount Mary Head Basketball Coach Marc Heidorf. "Giving up 54 points a game will win you many contests so hopefully we can build off this effort."

Leading the Blue Angel offensive charge with nine points was Brooke Uebersetzig. The sophomore guard also led the defensive side of the court with three steals.

Teammate Becky Onan chipped in with seven points and had a team high nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks.

The Blue Angels will enjoy the Thanksgiving break, then return to the Bloechl Center on Tue. Nov. 28 to take on rival Alverno College (0-1). Live stats and video will be made available for Tuesday's showdown; links can be found at mtmaryathletics.com.
