Cardinals Capture Win

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. – The Mount Mary University basketball team lost to host Andrews University today Andreasen Center. The Cardinals move to 6-6 on the season after taking the win 55-45.

Megan Johnson (Jr./Waukesha, Wis.) led the Blue Angels (4-11) on offense in tonight's contest against the Cardinals. Johnson went 4-of-8 from outside the three-point arc on her way to 14 points. Her four three-pointers made ties her for her season's best for a single game.

Erica Williams (Jr./Bloomington, Ill.) pulled down eight rebounds to lead her team on the glass. She also scored eight points as she went 4-of-9 from the field.

After an early 2-2 tie, both teams would go scoreless for a three-minute span. Following the offensive drought, Rae Grubbs (Sr./Covington, Ind.) nailed her first of two three pointers in the contest to give MMU 5-2.

The Cardinals came back and tied the game 7-7 then Grubbs nailed her second three to put the Blue Angels up front. MMU went on to take the quarter 14-9.

Aliyah Moore (Fr./Milwaukee, Wis.) started off the quarter with a made three-pointer in MMU's opening possession. The Blue Angels then kept the Cardinals scoreless for the opening two minutes of the quarter. Following another score by the Blue Angels, MMU went on their own scoreless streak that went over five minutes. By the end of the half, the Blue Angels held a 23-21 lead.

MMU swelled their lead out to 33-23 to open the second half. The Cardinals quickly responded by finishing a three-point-play at the free throw line followed by a three-point field goal on the following possession. That began an 11-3 run that helped the Cardinals cut the lead to five to end the third.

Andrews took a quick two point lead in the final quarter of the game when they held MMU off the scoreboard for the first six minutes of the frame. The Blue Angels tied the game at 43-43, but the Cardinals finished the contest on a 10-2 run to take their sixth win of the season.

"The team showed their character in a tough contest," said Mount Mary University Head Basketball Coach John Baillie. "... battling until the end."
