Sabercats Win at Home

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Maranatha Baptist University basketball team defeated Mount Mary University tonight at MBU Gymnasium. The Sabercats (14-2) and the Blue Angels (5-17) were tied 33-33 at halftime, but then MBU outscored the Blue Angels in the second half and took the 67-55 victory.

Rae Grubbs (Sr./Covington, Ind.) was one of two Blue Angels to lead the team with 15 points. Grubbs had one of her best nights from outside the three-point line after she went 5-of-6 from three-point territory against the Sabercats. Every field goal Grubbs made tonight was a three-pointer.

Erica Williams (Jr./Bloomington, Ill.) added 15 points against the Sabercats as well. Williams scored 11 of those points in the second half. Along with the lead on offense, Williams pulled down six rebounds.

Zyah Burnett (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) led MMU with nine rebounds in Tuesday night's game. Teammate Deovian Young (Jr./Milwaukee, Wis.) led the bench in scoring against MBU. Young scored nine points and went 2-of-2 from outside the three-point line.

The Blue Angels took the early lead 6-2 and held onto that lead until late in the first quarter. Six minutes into the quarter the Sabercats captured their first lead, although MMU fought back and tied the game 13-13 the next possession. MBU was able to edge out the slight lead after they outscored the Blue Angels 4-3 in the final three minutes of the first.

MMU had their most effective quarter of the night in the second. The Blue Angels went 4-of-7 from outside the three point line and 3-of-4 from the free throw line for 17 points. They forced the Sabercats to three team turnovers in the second and held MBU to 31 percent from the floor as the teams went into the halftime tied 33-33.

In the second half, the Sabercats took control limiting their turnovers and hitting more efficiently from the field. MMU hit 3-of-12 from the field in the third quarter to the Sabercats 37 percent from the floor. Following the third, the Sabercats took a 50-42 lead into the final frame.

The Blue Angels battled in the final quarter and cut the MBU lead down to four points one minutes into the frame. MMU hit 6-of-16 from the field in the fourth, but could not cut into the deficit any more. MBU took the 67-55 victory after hitting 46.7 percent from the floor in the final qurater.

The Blue Angels will conclude their regular season this Sun. Feb. 16 at the Bloechl Center. MMU is scheduled to take on the Cardinals at 2:00 PM on Sunday. Live video and stats are available at MtMaryAthletics.com.
