Second Place Finish For MMU

WAUWATOSA, Wis. – The Mount Mary University Golf Team started the 2016 season today at Currie Park Golf Course. A three team tournament including Alverno, Lakeland and host MMU went in favor of the Muskies who finished with the top team score of 360. The Blue Angels finished second with a team score of 505. Lakeland's Sami Jo Williams finished in first place shooting 80 on the round.

The Blue Angels turned in some big performances from freshman Jaqlyn Artman (Eldorado, Ill.) and returner Madison Ledda (So./Tracy, Calif.). Artman was the only non-Muskie to finish in the top five for individual play. The rookie finished the 18 holes with a 114 round and a fifth place finish.

Ledda turned in a score of 122, down from her 126.8 round average in 2015. The sophomore's performance was good enough for a tie for sixth place in individual play; Inferno Golfer Katelyn Bartlett also finished sixth.

Ariel Oviedo (Sr./Shawano, Wis.) was a few strokes off her 2015 low score of 124, the senior finished today's round with a 131 for tenth place. Peyton Davis (So./Tracy, Calif.) ended the home opener with an 11th place finish and a 138 finishing score.

"Today was about shaking off the cobwebs and working out the jitters." Mount Mary University Head Golf Coach Marc Heidorf add, "Each kid posted a much improved score on the back nine, which tells me they did well to keep focus as the afternoon went on."

Ledda finished with the biggest drop off from the front to back nine, shaving eight strokes off her respective nine. A theme from last year's team, the Blue Angels continually decreased their individual scores throughout the year.

The Blue Angels will head up to Elkhart Lake, Wis. to face Lakeland in a rematch at Quit Qui Oc Golf Course. Tee off is set for 1:00 pm on Sat. Sept. 10. Stay tuned to mtmaryathletics.com for more updates.
