Inferno Take First

MILWAUKEE – Today at the Currie Park Golf Course, the Alverno Inferno defeated the Mount Mary University golf team in a dual event by a score of 446-452. The Blue Angels have been able to place higher than Alverno in the previous two events this season and received a record setting performance by Blue Angel Jacqlyn Artman (So./Eldorado, Ill.), but the Inferno were able to register the team victory in the grueling 90-degree temperatures.

Artman took the previous single round record of 96, held by herself, down ten more strokes. The new mark of 86 came courtesy of seven pars. The sophomore came out of the clubhouse and record three straight pars to open her day.  In her record-setting day, Artman bogeyed only one of the par-3 holes while parring the rest.

The Inferno placed two of their golfers in the top five, and with their low 96 and 107 round scores, they were able negate the record-setting performance by Artman via low team scores.

The Blue Angels still received two more top five performances. Both Courtney Furlow (Jr./Appleton, Wis.) and Haley Jacquez (So./Oakley, Calif.) were able to finish with their best rounds of 2017.

Furlow had one par on hole No. 17, a 377-yard par-4. The rest of the round, Furlow was able to cut down on her season average as she executed in her approach. In her best round, Furlow finished the day with a 115

Jacquez made her difference with her power off the tee. Never more evident than on her par right after the turn. Jacquez registered her par on the challenging 422-yard par-5. The sophomore's drive paid off in the back nine with a 57 on her way to a 118 overall score.

Kaylie Cook (Fr./Fairborn, Ohio) was able to help the Blue Angels record their second lowest team score in program history. The rookie was able to finish with a 133 in her 18-holes. Cook executed in the back nine like many of her teammates with a 66.

Elaine Smith (So./Milwaukee, Wis.) finished her first collegiate round of golf. The newcomer to the NCAA ranks shot a 147 in her round. Smith's two best holes came on No. 8 and 16 when she registered double-bogies on each of the par-3's.

The Blue Angels will have tomorrow off, but then have to get back to the links for a showdown with Carroll University. The Pioneers and Blue Angels are ready for a noon tee time on Sun. Sept. 24. Scores, updates and news for the Blue Angels can be found at mtmaryathletics.com.
