Lions Get Past Blue Angels

Lions Get Past Blue Angels

HANCOCK, Mich. -- The Mount Mary University soccer team lost to Finlandia University 5-0 today. It is the first time since opening weekend, the Blue Angels allowed more than 2 goals in a single game.

Finlandia University came out firing today, much like the previous game played between the two teams. Last season, the Lions outshot MMU 31-1, almost a carbon copy of the offensive assault this year as Finlandia had 47 shots to MMU's 5.

A tough task for Marissa Rechlicz (Fr./West Allis, Wis.) as she had to come out of the offensive catalyst role, and have to step in to the goalbox for the injured Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.). Onan led NCAA with 105 saves on the season before the weekend began. Rechlicz turned away 21 shots on goal, but the five that got pass would make the Lions the winners for the third straight contest between the schools.

Emily Ristow (Jr./Sheboygan, Wis.) who leads the team with eight goals this season, was limited in her offensive oppurtunites since missing Rechlicz on the offensive side of the pitch, Ristow only had three shots on the day, two on goal.

The reshuffling of the team's lineup left the Blue Angels open on both sides of the field. The recipe of Rechlicz making good lead passes, and slowing down the defense was missed today, but her performance in the goal was more important than what the score reflected.

On the road again, the Blue Angels are headed for River Forest, Ill. to face Concordia University Chicago. The Cougars played at the Mount Mary Invitational at the beginning of the season, but the two teams did not match up. Kickoff for the MBU versus CUC game is Oct. 1st at 3:00 pm.
