Cyclones Take Blue Angels 3-1

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Soccer Team concluded the Mount Mary Invitational today against fellow Association of Division III Independents member Mills. The Cyclones (2-1) captured the 3-1 win over MMU (0-2).

The first half was a near stalemate. The teams swapped possessions seemingly throughout the entire game, and the first 45 minutes were no exception. After 20 minutes of the teams positioning themselves for better shots, Dahlia Pimentel received a pass from Biana Lomeli to give Mills the 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime.

The teams were even, both with four shots in the first 45. Both teams with three of those shots on goal.

Both teams picked up their offenses in the second half. Biana Lomeli took a deflection off the defense in her own territory, and knocked it in the net to make it 2-0 at the 57:13 mark. Mills cranked up the pressure riffling eight shots on goal in the second half.

Playing the entire 90 minutes in the field, Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) headed a ricochet off the Cyclones defense passed the goal keepers hands for Onan's second goal of the season. Allison Klotz (Fr./Port Washington, Wis.) was credited with the assist receiving her first collegiate assist one game after her first NCAA goal to open the season against Alverno.

At 2-1, the Blue Angels continued to pressure and take advantage on the offensive side of the ball. Cerina Bhavnani slipped inside the defense and fired a shot after she received a pass from Ashley Crespin to make the game 3-1 with only 2:25 left on the clock.

"Overall I'm really happy with the progression of our team. I think we improved on the mistakes we made on Friday. We competed, our effort and energy were strong. I think the team showed a great deal of fight. Being down 2-0 and finding a way to get that goal."

Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani added, "The goal energized us, and I think we moved numbers forward and really created chances to tie it. Anytime you press forward, there is always a chance that team could pick up the late goal. Overall I credit Mills, they did a good job of finishing their chances around the goal area. This was two teams that were evenly matched. As a team, these are games we want to definitely compete in. And I think as we continually improve, we should be on the right side of the result."

The Blue Angels will get ready for their first road game of the 2016 season as they head to face Eureka College. The battle against the Red Devils is set for Wed. Sept. 7 at 4:00 pm. Pay attention to mtmaryathletics.com for breaking news and updates.
