Blue Angels Get Second Win

Blue Angels Get Second Win

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Soccer Team hosted the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers (0-3) at Mount Mary Field today. The Blue Angels took the matchup 6-1 for their second win of the season making them 2-3.

It did not take long for the Blue Angels to get the ball in the Tigers territory after the opening whistle. MMU raced down and Karina Salgado (So./Chicago, Ill.) broke open to shoot the games' first shot into the outstretched hands of the goal keeper, only 66 seconds into the contest.

The Blue Angels continued to attack early, then Kaeli Stellings (Fr./Beloit, Wis.) setup Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) for the game's first goal. The fourth goal of the season for Onan now has her tied for second in the Association of Division III Independents goals leaders.

Stellings attacked the defense time and time again, finally Stellings corralled her own deflection off a defender smacking her fourth goal of the year making the score 2-0.

After a season of setting up her teammates, Salgado received a pass from Katy Groth (So./Racine, Wis.) at the 37:01 mark, and fired it in the net for the Blue Angels third and final goal of the half.

Following a game stoppage with five minutes left in the half, the extra delay prompted a shortened second half. Collectively motivated, the Tigers quickly took the first possession as Aaugust Watkins broke away for the Tigers only goal of the game making 3-1 with 24 minutes left on the clock.

Salgado added one more goal only two minutes later giving MMU back the sizable lead. Both Stellings and Groth would find Alexa Ahlgrim (Fr./Inverness, Ill.) on separate occasions as Ahlgrim knocked in her first and second collegiate goals. MMU outshot the Tigers 31 to 2 in the 6-1 win.

Following today's game, the Blue Angels will have a few days off before their next contest. MMU will host MacMurray on Fri. Sept. 16 with the kickoff set for 4:00 pm. Stay tuned to mtmaryathletics.com for all updates.
