Blue Angels Shutout Lions

MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary University Soccer defeated the visiting Finlandia Lions today at Mount Mary Field. The Blue Angels won the Association of Division III Independents rival by a score of 3-0.

The Blue Angels (4-4, 1-1 AD3I) came out attacking the Lions defense right away. Four minutes into the game, Allison Klotz (Fr./Port Washington, Wis.) was fouled inside the 18-yard box. Klotz took the penalty shot and hammered the kick into the net making it 1-0.

Thirty minutes later Kaeli Stellings (Fr./Beloit, Wis.) raced past the defense and received a long pass through the penalty box from Klotz and with Stellings quick strike, MMU went up 2-0. The Blue Angels took that lead into halftime after allowing only one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

The third goal came after a hand ball was called 30 yards out. Logan Ormeroid (Sr./New Berlin, Wis.) stuck the kick through the heart of the Lions defense as Klotz corralled the pass and ripped a shot that found the net making the score 3-0.

Hannah Rose (Fr./Jeromesville, Ohio) finished her second shutout of the season with one save on one shot on goal. The shutout also gives Rose a 4-3 collegiate record at goalkeeper.

"Finlandia was a tough opponent today, they came with 11 players and they worked really hard and never gave up. We had to earn our goals today, nothing was easy for us." Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani went on, "I feel like we created chances well, but we needed to be a bit more clinical in the final third. The team continues to improve we are doing all the right stuff, I am happy with the result. We can learn from today and keep working to get better. Everyone chipped in so this was a great team win."

The fourth win of the season for the Blue Angels sets the school record for wins against NCAA opponents, three was the previous record set in the 2010 season. With the overall school win record at eight, this year's team has the chance to defeat seven more NCAA schools than the record setting 2012 team.

Next up for the Blue Angels will be Grace Bible (5-4). MMU Soccer will travel to Wyoming Mich. next Fri. Sept. 30 at 3:00 pm. For stats and updates, check out mtmaryathletics.com.
