Sabercats Shutout Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – Maranatha Baptist University defeated the Mount Mary University soccer team 3-0 today at Mount Mary Field. The Sabercats (2-7) get their second shutout of the season while the Blue Angels drop to 5-6 on the year.

Throughout the game the teams traded possession back and forth while never settling in one territory for long. 10 minutes into the game, the Sabercats found an opening on a fast break when Bethany Wright collected a ricocheted pass off of Hannah Rose (Fr./Jeromesville, Ohio). After the tie up with the goalkeeper, Wright hit the open net goal making it 1-0.

The Blue Angels fired two shots in the first half, one of which was on goal to the Sabercats seven shots, four on goal.

The teams continued to trade possessions into the second half until the 55 minute mark, a cross field pass from Shari Moore to Hannah McCutcheon catching the defense off guard as the Sabercats shot made it 2-0. The lead held until the seventy minute mark, when Janae Jorgensen knocked in the third and final goal making it 3-0.

"Tough result tonight, Maranatha Baptist played really well. They were organized and defended with numbers, they caused us a lot of problems tonight." Head Coach Soccer Jon Gulrajani explained, "This was the end of a tough stretch of three games in four days and our legs were heavy tonight. We really started well and created some chances in the first 10 minutes, but Maranatha capitalized on a mistake in the back."

The Blue Angels continued to attack the openings in the second half coming away with two shots on goal.

Rose was given the loss in goal making her 5-5 since taking over starting duties. Rose finished the game with three saves on seven shots on goal by the Sabercats.

"We will take a few days off and regroup. I like this group and I am confident they will finish the season strong, we have been resilient all year and we expect to improve."

Following today's game, the Blue Angels will get ready to host their final home game Tue. Oct. 11 against Andrews University (0-6). The kickoff against the Cardinals will be at 3:30 pm. Live stats will be made available at mtmaryathletics.com.
