Blue Angels Down Lions

Blue Angels Down Lions

HANCOCK, Mich. – The Mount Mary University soccer team took one step closer to the school's single season wins record as they defeated host Finlandia University 3-0. After the Blue Angels second straight shutout, they are now 7-6 with two games left on the schedule as they prepare to travel to Berrien Springs, Mich. Fri. Oct. 21.

MMU took control of the game early on as Alexa Ahlgrim (Fr./Inverness, Ill.) knocked in the game's first goal at the 12 minute mark off a well-placed pass from Karina Salgado (So./Chicago, Ill.). The shot was one of 21 that the Blue Angels fired away in the first half alone.

The overwhelming defense from MMU limited the Lions to three shots in the first half, and that would be the only shots Finlandia took in the entire game.

Taking charge again in the second half, the Blue Angels kept on the attack. MMU took 16 shots in the second half, one of which Allison Klotz (Fr./Port Washington, Wis.) took from the left side and fired into the net making the game 2-0 Blue Angels.

Leading the corner kick battle 7-2, Allison Klotz hit the third and final goal of the game off of a corner kick from the foot of Salgado. Klotz received a pass in the 18-yard box and took advantage of the defenders missteps as she blasted a shot past the goal keeper making it 3-0.

Hannah Rose (Fr./Jeromesville, Ohio) adds her fourth shutout of the 2016 season and is now 7-5 as a collegiate goal keeper.

With just two games left to go in the season, the Blue Angels can tie the school's single season wins record. The 2012 Blue Angels went 8-7 setting the school's all-time mark. One note, the 2012 soccer team defeated one NCAA team in their record setting season. This year's team has defeated six NCAA institutions already.

Following today's rival game against Finlandia, the Blue Angels will have six days to get ready for their next opponent Andrews University (0-8). The Blue Angels defeated the Cardinals on Oct. 11 by a score of 6-0. Now MMU will travel to Berrien Springs, Mich. to face Andrews in a rematch.
