MILWAUKEE -- Following a record setting season for the Mount Mary University soccer program, the Blue Angels look to continue their upward trend in 2017. The Blue Angels core group of experienced veterans welcomes in the new rookies and prepares for this upcoming soccer season.
In 2016, the Blue Angels set many records. After a slow start, the Blue Angels found their way when they traveled down to Eureka College and attained their first victory of the season in a convincing 5-1 win. Once the Blue Angels got the proverbial monkey off their backs and their first win of the season, the Blue Angels went on a 4-3 stretch all the while keeping each game within reach.
Following a 3-0 loss to Association of Division III Independents rival Maranatha Baptist University (6-8-2), the Blue Angels won three of their final four games, including back-to-back wins against Alverno (5-12) and Finlandia (0-9). It marked only the second time in school history that the Blue Angels defeated two consecutive NCAA programs. The Blue Angels tied the program's win record with just one game left to go, but Crown College defeated MMU 4-1 in the season finale to leave Mount Mary 8-7 on the year.
This season the Blue Angels look to build off the record-setting seasons of the upperclassmen and last year's freshman class. Kaeli Stellings (So./Beloit, Wis.) and Allison Klotz (So./Port Washington, Wis.) became the first MMU rookie tandem to each score 10 or more goals in the same season.
Hannah Rose (So./Jeromesville, Ohio) took over the responsibilities in goal last year. Along with the efforts of her revamped defense, Rose and her defense allowed only 2.14 goals per game in 2016. An astonishing cut from 2015's 6.00 goals allowed per game by MMU.
The Blue Angels also return three seniors in 2017. Becky Onan (Grafton, Wis.), Lucy Vue (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Logan Ormeroid (New Berlin, Wis.) will lead MMU Soccer in their final collegiate seasons. Along with three other upperclassmen, the Blue Angels look to lean on experience for the first time in many seasons.
The Blue Angels will open the year as they always do with the Mount Mary Invite. This season the invite will host Crown College, North Central University and longtime rival Alverno College. The games will begin this Friday at 3:00 pm when MMU takes on the Rams.
