Blue Angels Prevail Over Red Devils

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team defeated visiting Eureka College this afternoon at the Mount Mary Soccer Field. Following the 7-0 victory, the Blue Angels record is now 2-3-1 before they head on a two game road trip through the state of Illinois.

The Blue Angels took control of the ball and the tempo early on against the Red Devils (0-5). A relentless attack in the first 10 minutes, Mount Mary came away with two quick goals to give them the lead. The first of the two came off a wide setup pass from Lucy Vue (Sr./Milwaukee, Wis.) that Allison Klotz (So./Port Washington, Wis.) took back towards the goal as she riffled a shot passed the goal keeper to make things 1-0.

Senior Becky Onan (Grafton, Wis.) took a free kick that again had Klotz set with an opening in the oppositions territory. Klotz turned around and snuck a shot into the net making the score 2-0 just eight minutes into the contest.

At the 13-minute mark, Alexa Ahlgrim (So./Inverness, Ill.) won a ball among three defenders and found Klotz cutting towards the goal with a well-placed pass. Klotz took the defender and the goal keeper all the way to the right of the goal then quickly placed a seam-shot to the left to receive the first half hat-trick and give MMU the 3-0 lead.

Klotz stole a pass from the Red Devils and while in enemy territory quickly added one more goal to start the second half and give MMU the 4-0 lead. The fourth goal of the game for Klotz doubled up her season total as it now sits at eight.

Karina Salgado (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) received a pass from Klotz just moments after the fourth goal on the left side. Salgado deked the defender then bounced a shot off of the goal keeper to make things 5-0.

At the 66-minute mark, freshman Renee Cleary (Fr./Slinger, Wis.) added her first goal of the season after a free kick well outside the box bent its way over the head of the goal keeper to push things even further to 6-0.

MMU received their final score when a clearing shot deflected off a Red Devil defender for an "own goal."

The Blue Angels outshot their opponent 42-1 today. With no shots on goal, Hannah Rose (So./Jeromesville, Ohio) gets the rare no-save win to make her 2-3-1 on the campaign.

"It was a great team effort today. I thought we came out with good energy and really did a nice job of pressuring the ball and denying passing lanes," said Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani. "We did a nice job of possessing the ball and our combinations in the final third were much improved."

"Everyone contributed today…" coach Gulrajani listed the efforts, "Alli [Klotz] was much more active in the attack and she did a better job of creating shooting opportunities and finishing her chances. Our midfield really did a good job controlling the ball and setting up our forwards."

"Karina and Becky were strong today winning balls and starting our attack. Renee Cleary has been really consistent, she controls the back line and reads the game well, it was great to see her find her first goal on a free kick. "

Following today's win, the Blue Angels will prepare themselves for a trip through Illinois this weekend. MMU will first take on Blackburn College Fri. Sept. 22 in Carlinville, Ill. then the Blue Angels will travel to Jacksonville, Ill. to take on MacMurray College for a 1:00 pm kickoff on Sat. Sept. 23.
