Warriors Work Victory

MILWAUKEE – Host Wisconsin Lutheran College (4-8) was victorious over the Mount Mary University soccer team tonight at Warriors Soccer Field. The Warriors had a 1-0 halftime lead that expanded to a 4-0 final score over the Blue Angels who now sit at 3-6-1 on the year.

In the first half, the Blue Angels kept the Warriors at bay for the initial thirty minutes. WLC attacked with 21 first half shots to MMU's one. Hannah Rose (So./Jeromesville, Ohio) and her defense deterred shot after shot, but at the 29:57 mark, Warrior Lexi Caira knocked in a ricochet off a corner kick to make things 1-0.

The Blue Angels and Rose again withstood the offensive charge from the Warriors for a long stretch. This time, the defense and goal keeper Hannah Rose turned away more shots until the 68-minute mark when Mady Hirsch broke away from the defense and ripped a shot around Rose's reach for a 2-0 lead for the Warriors.

10 minutes later, WLC added a third goal from Helen Joyce on a solid cross from Katriana Pearce. Following that, the Blue Angels had a defense mishap and hit in their first own-goal of the season making things 4-0.

Rose (3-6-1) saved 19 shots in total against the Warriors. In a rare happenstance, Blue Angel Hannah Rose corralled two saves from Warrior defender Anna Rose.

"Tonight we take a bit of a moral victory," stated Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani. "We had no subs, on the road against a very good WLC team, and we executed our game plan really well the first half."

"Second half WLC used their pace and moved the ball a little quicker so they made it tough on us, and they deserved the result." Coach Gulrajani added, "I am really proud of our team we really put a lot of work in, defended hard all over the field, and showed a tough mentality as a team. We all played well but Hannah [Rose] really did a nice job in goal and made some quality saves to keep things tight."

Following tonight's contest, the Blue Angels will have a week to prepare for their next contest against rival Alverno College (1-10). The Inferno will host the game which is set for Sat. Oct. 6. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm with live stats and video available at mtmaryathletics.com.
