Blue Angels Top Inferno

Blue Angels Top Inferno

MILWAUKEE – Today at the Alverno Soccer Field, the Mount Mary University soccer team defeated host Alverno College (1-12) by a score of 3-1. The win ends the two-game skid for the Blue Angels who sit at 4-6-1 this regular season, and puts a dent in the 16-2 all-time series lead the Inferno have over MMU.

The Inferno attacked repeatedly from the opening whistle. Shot after shot, the Inferno attacked the Blue Angel defense with consistent pressure. In the first half alone, the Inferno blasted eight shots as a team, five where on goal.

Despite the heavy attack from Alverno, the Blue Angels made their shots count. Allison Klotz (So./Port Washington, Wis.) received a well-placed corner kick from Karina Salgado (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) in the penalty box and turned and fired into the net to give MMU the 1-0 lead at 20 minutes.

14 minutes later the Inferno relentlessly attacked the Blue Angels goal. Following a deflection, Andrea Brinkley bent a high shot just outside the reach of Hannah Rose (So./Jeromesville, Ohio) and into the goal. The teams ended the half on that 1-1 score.

The Inferno turned up the heat on offense in the second half, but Rose and the Blue Angel defense doused those flames. 14 second half shots for the Inferno came up empty also gave Rose 10 more saves.

On the other side of the field, the Blue Angels stretched out Alverno's defense when necessary. Klotz received a pass from senior Logan Ormeroid (New Berlin, Wis.) and split the opponent's defense. Klotz finished up with a blooping shot over the goal keeper's reach to give MMU the 2-1 lead with 12 minutes left in the game.

The Blue Angels found another quick opening just five minutes later when Alexa Ahlgrim (So./Inverness, Ill.) found Klotz again in enemy territory. Klotz worked around the defenders and found the net for her third goal of the day. The 3-1 lead would last until the final buzzer.

"The second half we took a great deal of pressure from Alverno," Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani went on, "…they came out strong and really made it tough for us to play. We just dug in as a team and defended well. We created a few chances off the counter attack and Alli [Klotz] did a great job getting shots on the frame today."

With 14 saves in 15 opportunities, Rose now moves to 4-6-1 on the season in goal.

"Today was one of those days that we didn't play our best but found the result," coach Gulrajani added. "Proud of how the team stuck with it and finished strong."

The Blue Angels will get back in action Tue. Oct. 10 in Berrien Springs, Mich. to take on Andrews University. Live stats for the 3:00 pm kickoff will be available at mtmaryathletics.com.
