Blue Angels Shutout Cardinals

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. – Today at Andrews University Soccer Field, the Mount Mary University soccer team defeated the host Cardinals (0-5) by a final score of 2-0. Now with two consecutive wins, the Blue Angels sit at 5-6-1 before they host Finlandia University (1-8-1) this Sat. Oct. 14 at Mount Mary Field.

The two teams swapped possessions for the first 35 minutes of play. The Blue Angels established themselves multiple times in their opposition's territory to open things up, but did not find the net until that 35-minute mark.

With just ten minutes left in the half, senior Becky Onan (Grafton, Wis.) took control of a loose ball just outside the box and bent a shot over the heads of the defenders and the goal keeper to knock in the game's first goal. The senior's third goal of the season sparked a revitalization of her teammates as they responded right back.

Just four minutes later the Blue Angels continued their pressure in enemy territory. Following a clear from AU's goal keeper, MMU Forward Allison Klotz (So./Port Washington, Wis.) played the errant pass and slipped around her defender. Then quickly bent a shot over the head of the goal keeper for the Blue Angels second goal.

The Blue Angels kept that 2-0 lead throughout the entire second half. Adding eight team shots in the second half, the Blue Angels attacked with the same intensity as the first. Despite the continued attack on AU's goal, MMU could not push the score any further than 2-0.

Hannah Rose (So./Jeromesville, Ohio) and her defense gave MMU their third shutout of the season. Rose is now 5-6-1 in the goal box this season with four saves.

"Andrews is an athletics team and they challenged us," Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani said. "I was a little disappointed we could not control things at the end, however."

"It was a solid team effort," coach Gulrajani added, "we did a great job finishing at the end of the first half, I'd just like to see that effort throughout."

Following today's win over the Cardinals, the Blue Angels will host Finlandia University Sat. Oct. 14 at 9:00 am. Live stats for this weekend's game against the Lions can be found at mtmaryathletics.com.
