Blue Angels Lash Lions

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team defeated visiting Finlandia University today at Mount Mary Field. The Blue Angels (6-6-1) parlayed a 2-0 halftime lead into a 3-1 win over the Lions (1-9-1) as MMU was victorious for the third straight contest.

The Blue Angels found near instant offense in their morning match against the Lions. Alexa Ahlgrim (So./Inverness, Ill.) found a loose ball in the heart of the opposition's defense and fired a shot into the net just 60 seconds into the game. The quick lead gave the Blue Angels some breathing room right off the bat.

The second goal of the contest came later in the opening half. 28 minutes into the game, Allison Klotz (So./Port Washington, Wis.) found teammate Karina Salgado (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) in perfect position in the middle of multiple defenders. Salgado worked around the opposition and riffled the Blue Angels second goal into the net making things 2-0 Mount Mary.

MMU capped off their scoring in the early portion of the second half when Allison Klotz received a well-placed pass from Tataya Luangphaxayachack (Jr./Milwaukee, Wis.) and with the forward's speed, outran her defender and kicked in the third MMU goal of the game.

The Lions found their lone goal of the game following a rebound. Kelsi McDermid corralled a deflection from Jennifer Hernandez's previous shot, then found the back of the net with a blooping shot over Hannah Rose's (So./Jeromesvile, Ohio) outstretched hands. Following the score for the Lions, the 3-1 score carried to the final buzzer.

Hannah Rose (6-6-1) finished the day with 10 saves officially.

"It was a great team effort today," said Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani. "This group works so hard so it's great to see them get a result."

"Alexa [Ahlgrim] did a nice job taking the ball down and getting a great strike on goal. It gave us a nice lift and really put belief in the team," coach Gulrajani continued the praise of his players. "Karina [Salgado] was really solid today as well. Her strike was fantastic and it came at a great time. We talked about getting a solid start to the second half and the early goal from Alli [Klotz] helped us close the game down."

Following today's game, the Blue Angels will take on Rockford University next week. MMU and the Regents will begin play at 4:00 pm on Fri. Oct. 20 on the campus of Rockford University. Stay tuned to mtmaryathletics.com for updates on news and additional coverage.
