Seniors Solidify Win

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team closed out their home schedule with a win today against Andrews University. On MMU's rainy and muddy senior day, the Blue Angels (7-7-1) were able to outshoot their opponent on their way to a 2-0 win over the Cardinals (0-8).

The Blue Angels smothered their opposition the entire 90 minutes. Not allowing a single shot in the first half, MMU made the most of their opportunities with nine first half shots. Of those shots, five were shot on goal.

MMU found an opening 21 minutes into the game. Following a deflected shot from forward Allison Klotz (So./Port Washington, Wis.), Pang Kou Xiong (Jr./Milwaukee, Wis.) found the loose ball and cracked a shot into the net to give MMU the 1-0 lead. While the Blue Angels continued to attack on offense, they would head into halftime leading by one.

In the second half, the Blue Angels continued to apply the pressure on offense while still not allowing the opposition to get comfortable in Blue Angel territory. Andrews got off one team shot on goal in the second half, which Hannah Rose (So./Jeromesville, Ohio) stopped on her way to her fourth shutout of the season.

With 22 minutes left in the game, senior Becky Onan (Grafton, Wis.) corralled a pass-deflection and launched a deep shot outside of the box that bent over the goalkeeper's head for the Blue Angels second goal of the game. The 2-0 lead for MMU carried to the final buzzer as MMU won their seventh game of the season.

"Great team victory today on senior day in tough conditions," said a proud Mount Mary Head Soccer Coach Jon Gulrajani. "We did a nice job controlling the game and keeping possession on the opponent's half."

"Andrews put forth a great effort and it was tough to break them down," add coach Gulrajani. "I thought we executed very well today. It was a great tribute to our seniors Becky Onan and Lucy Vue. They have meant so much to this program. The players wanted to get a victory in their last game at home. So it was very fitting to have Becky score the second goal to close the game and finish a great career at our home field."

Following today's win, the Blue Angels will have a chance to tie the program's all-time best in regular season wins against Crown College (0-16). The Blue Angels head to St. Bonifacius, Minn. on Sat. Oct. 28 for a noon kickoff. Check out mtmaryathletics.com for updates and statistics on your favorite Blue Angels.
