Late Flurry Falls Just Short Against Inferno

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Nyasia Hardy (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) netted two goals—Mount Mary's first of the season—and added an assist, but her five-point effort fell just short as the MMU soccer team fell to archrival Alverno College, 4-3, Wednesday night at Alverno Soccer Field.

The loss drops Mount Mary to 0-4-0 overall.

Alverno (2-0-0 overall) surged to a 3-0 lead at the half, capped off with a late Inferno stroke in the 44th minute from just outside the 18.

But Mount Mary settled in nicely in the second half, earning better scoring opportunities with much more tactical possessions.

In the 78th minute, Hardy finally snapped what was a 28-goals-against streak for Mount Mary this season, doing so in unassisted fashion.

Alverno would respond a minute and a half later to extend the lead back to three goals, but a late MMU flurry certainly made the final few minutes interesting.

Freshman Micaela Gonzalez (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) scored her first collegiate goal at the 88:17 mark on a Hardy assist. Hardy, who led the Blue Angels with eight points in 2019, then added her second goal of the afternoon just over a minute later, and with 41 seconds left on the clock.

Despite being outshot 25-14 for the game, MMU actually led 10-9 in the second half alone.

Freshmen Brianna Brown (San Diego, Calif./Hoover) and Angie Gomez (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) split time in goal Wednesday. Brown tallied nine saves against 12 shots on-goal, while Gomez recorded a personal best four saves in the second half.

Mount Mary will return to action against its second straight NACC opponent next Tuesday, traveling to Lakeland for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Saturday's Blue Angel Bash matchup originally scheduled against Blackburn has been postponed due to COVID protocol with the Beavers' program.
