Early Lead Slips Away as Soccer Falls to Andrews

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team experienced its first lead of the 2021 season Sunday, but couldn't hang on as Andrews University scored five unanswered goals to claim a 5-1 victory at MMU Soccer Field.

Mount Mary (0-7) put the pressure on early with a goal in the 16th minute. Off an Andrews throw-in near midfield, sophomore Ashton Longazel (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) leapt high in heavy traffic, playing a perfect header back into the Andrews backfield. Freshman Micaela Gonzalez (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) timed her run perfectly, streaking past two Cardinal defenders and beating the Andrews keeper top left to hand MMU its first lead in seven games.

The game-opening goal was the second of the season for Gonzalez, and her assist marked the first point of the year for Longazel.

Andrews (1-4) would respond less than four minutes later with a well-played ball through the Mount Mary defense, finding the foot of Angelina Nesmith for her first goal of the day. Nesmith would add her second putaway just three minutes later to put the Cardinals up 2-1 at the half.

MMU had some corner opportunities in the second stanza, but some defensive miscues led to a handful of tough opportunities for Freshman goalkeeper Angie Gomez (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther). Gomez would end the afternoon with a pair of saves, but Andrews' Katie Davis tallied a hat trick all by herself to seal the road win.

The Blue Angels will get an opportunity for revenge with Andrews in less than a week, traveling to Berrien Springs, Mich., for game two of the home-and-home series Friday afternoon.
