Lions Tame Soccer in Penultimate Game of 2021

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team dropped game one of a three-game series at MMU Soccer Field Friday, falling to Finlandia University 5-0.

Mount Mary (0-14-1) manufactured a pair of shots Friday, both coming on goal and both coming late in the first half. A leading pass through the right side found the foot of streaking freshman Micaela Gonzalez (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) whose deep strike at the 36-minute mark was secured by the FU keeper.

Just over five minutes later, sophomore Ashton Longazel (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) nearly snuck a tricky bounder past the Lion keeper off a deep boot from out right for the second shot of the game.

Finlandia (6-9-1) broke open the scoring with one of the earliest goals of the season, as the Lion offender collected and put away a loose ball in the box just over the two-minute mark. A rebounded ball to the right post in the 15th minute made it 2-0, but the Blue Angel defense held strong for the rest of the first 45.

FinnU added goals in the 48th, 67th, and 85th minute to eventually put the game away.

The freshman goalkeeping tandem of Brianna Brown (San Diego, Calif./Herbert Hoover) and Angie Gomez (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) combined for 17 saves against 22 Finlandia shots on goal. Gomez, who came on in relief in the 48th minute, recorded 12 saves—three off her personal best set in a complete game earlier this season.

Mount Mary will close out its 2021 regular season by hosting fellow Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference member Mills College (Calif.) Sunday at 1 p.m. Mills and Finlandia will play a 1 p.m. neutral game on Saturday, also at MMU Soccer Field.
