Cyclones Sweep Away Soccer in Season Finale

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team concluded its regular season with a Sunday matinee, falling 6-1 in a spirited battle with Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe Mills College (Calif.) at MMU Soccer Field.

Mount Mary, with a roster comprised almost entirely of first-year players, finishes the season 0-15-1 overall.

Mills outshot Mount Mary 19-4 overall, and held a 10-2 advantage in on-goal attempts. Despite the loss, MMU scored its seventh goal of the season, snapping a three-game scoreless streak dating back to a 2-2 tie with Alverno on October 17. Additionally, its four shots were the most since two weeks prior at Alverno Field.

While most of the first half was played in the middle third, Mills patiently manufactured a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead at the break. The Cyclones then added a third score in the 69th minute off a rebound to the right post.

MMU would responded just over two minutes later as sophomore Nyasia Hardy (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) collected a ball near midfield, saw an advantage, and streaked past a trio of Cyclones up the right sideline. Hardy's deep boot from the top of the 18 sliced right past the keeper, notching her third goal of the year while cutting into the Mills lead, 3-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Angie Gomez (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) recorded four saves. But Mills' constant pressure put away two goals off rebounds, and the Cyclones capitalized off numerous multi-player advantages deep in MMU territory, putting forth a three-goal barrage late in the second half.

Freshman Amanda Antonio (Racine, Wis./Horlick) put forth the Blue Angels' other on-target attempt early in the second half, with freshmen Mary Parlier (Milwaukee, Wis./Dominican) and Cate Mitchell (Mazomanie, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) each having a shot attempt go wide of target.

Whereas Mills (2-8 overall) will head to the C2C Tournament in Salisbury, Md., next weekend, Sunday's matchup marked the end of the Blue Angels' 2021 campaign.
