Mount Mary and Spurgeon play to draw

Mount Mary and Spurgeon play to draw

Milwaukee, WI – Friday featured the first ever soccer match between the visiting Knights of Spurgeon College and the Mount Mary Blue Angels.  The last time Mount Mary took the pitch it was in a rain-soaked low scoring loss to Ripon College, much better weather conditions occurred on Friday, as MMU and Spurgeon played to a 90 minute scoreless draw.

The first half played out as a nearly even 45 minutes, the best chance of the half came for Spurgeon's Beth Bishop.  MMU keeper Dylan Christensen made a highlight reel save on her shot from point blank range, to keep the Knights off the scoreboard in the first half.

Ashton Longazel and Sam Reyes made competitive runs on goal in half number one, but Mount Mary was unable to find the back of the net.

The second half was just as even, with both team seeming to control the play for long segments of the half.  Spurgeon attempted several corner kicks that did not result in scoring chances.  Mount Mary tilted the field their way as well, with Sam Reyes, Ashton Longazel, and Meah Mora with impressive runs nearly leading to goals.  Reyes in particular had a shot that seemed destined for the net that missed just wide.

Dylan Christensen put up her 3rd clean sheet of the season, with 10 saves.    The draw was the fourth for the Blue Angels, following ties with Alverno, Andrews, and Maranatha Baptist.

Mount Mary (0-13-4) will have one match remaining on the 2022 campaign.  MMU will host Eureka College on Monday, October 31st, at the Blue Angel Soccer Field.  The match is scheduled to begin at 1 pm and all coverage can be found here on www.mtmaryathletics.com
