Antonio's late goal leads to season ending tie vs Eureka

Milwaukee, WI - In what would be their final match of the 2022 soccer season, the Mount Mary Blue Angels hosted Eureka College in an afternoon match on Monday.  Both teams had good scoring chances throughout the match, but at the end of the day it was truly an even game.  Amanda Antonio scored a clutch goal for the Blue Angels with under three minutes to play, the goal pushed the match to a 2-2 tie, which would be the final score.

Both teams attempted 15 shots on goal and total shots were only separated by one, a clear indication of how tight the match was.

In the first half the play was even on the field and the scoreboard.  Eureka scored first but Ashton Longazel evened the match with a run up the right sideline and blast for the equalizer and to give MMU momentum at the half.  Longazel's play was a definitely highlight throughout the season, as she consistently was an offensive standout for MMU.

Coming into the second half tied at 1, Jenna Kinney struck first with her second goal of the day for Eureka.  A key to the match was the Mount Mary defense holding strong from that point forward, keeping the margin within one, giving Antonio a chance to score the equalizer.

Wrapping a fine first season in goal, Dylan Christensen piled up 13 saves on the afternoon.

Antonio's goal, her first of the season was the culmination of consistent pressure put on by MMU in the 2nd half.  The aggression on goal was provided by Longazel, Antonio, Sam Reyes and Lexi Behringer.  A clear characteristic of the young team throughout the season has been a refusal to give up, which was definitely on display in the season's final match.  The draw was MMU's fifth of the season and second consecutive tie, following a 0-0 result against Spurgeon College.

Mount Mary (0-13-5) completes the season on a positive note, with the two consecutive draws, and late heroics against Eureka.  The Blue Angels have several young players who showed outstanding potential throughout the 18-game season, which is encouraging for the Mount Mary soccer program and its fans.
