Blue Angels drop tight contest at Defiance to open season

Defiance, OH- Saturday saw the Mount Mary Blue Angel soccer team open their season against the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College.  Mount Mary largely controlled the run of play in the first half, led by Paris Berrospe, making her collegiate debut, Berrospe scored a first half goal, and put constant pressure on the Defiance net.  Hallie Webb of Defiance scored twice in half number one, which staked the Yellow Jackets to a 2-1 lead at the half.

Each team scored one goal in the second half, Melissa Bixler put Defiance up 3-1 but Sam Reyes struck back for Mount Mary in the 74th minute.  For Reyes it was her 5th career goal in just 19 games. Mount Mary attacked until the final whistle but fell just short by a final of 3-2.

Statistically, the match was very even.  Shots, shots on goal, saves, and corners were all nearly even between the two sides.

In addition to Berrospe's outstanding play, Karen Hernandez, Rebecca Nazario, Grace Nguyen, Catea Thurston, Lydia Omernik and Keely Ramirez-Andres made their collegiate debuts in the match.
