Blue Angels claim second win of the season at Eureka

Eureka, IL- The Mount Mary soccer team faced a road contest against the Red Devils of Eureka College on Sunday.  In the finale of the 2022 season, MMU and Eureka played to a 2-2 draw.  On Sunday, the two teams played another tight match, but Mount Mary would prevail this season, as the Blue Angels claimed their second win of the 2023 season by a final score of 3-1.

The first half was largely dominated by Mount Mary, the Blue Angels recorded twenty shots to just three for Eureka.  But the game was tied at one on the scoreboard, Ashley Wilcox scored for Eureka and Sam Reyes found the net for Mount Mary.  For Reyes, the first half goal was her fourth of the season. 

The difference maker in the match would be Kelley Duffy's first career goal, the midfielder struck in the match's 59th minute.  The goal would give the Blue Angels a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.  Mount Mary continued their offensive attack through the entire match, Paris Berrospe added her second goal of the season (assisted by Duffy) which put MMU ahead by a 3-1 score, which would be the final tally for the match.

Statistically, Mount Mary dominated the match.  The Blue Angels outshot Eureka 29 to 5, and shots on goal were 14 to 4 in favor of Mount Mary.  Dylan Christensen went the distance in net for the Blue Angels, recording three saves in the win.

Mount Mary (2-4) will return to Wisconsin for their next match, but will again be on the road.  On Tuesday, September 19th, Mount Mary will head to Watertown for a match at Maranatha Baptist University.  The match will take place at 2 pm and all coverage will be available here on www.mtmaryathletics.com
