Blue Angels drop close match at home to Spurgeon College

Milwaukee, WI – The Mount Mary soccer team played their first home match since Tuesday, September 5th on Saturday.  That match was a victory over Alverno, this Saturday did not turn out as well for Mount Mary, as the Blue Angels dropped a 2-1 contest to the Knights of Spurgeon College.

Spurgeon visited Mount Mary last season as well, the two sides played to a scoreless draw on October 28th, 2022.  In the 2023 meeting, there were goals to be had for both sides.  Amanda Antonio put the Blue Angels up 1-0 in the 31st minute, but Spurgeon answered with 2 first half goals and carried a 2-1 lead into the half.

Unfortunately for Mount Mary, the second half was a scoreless stalemate as Spurgeon held on for the 2-1 victory.   Mount Mary largely controlled the run of play, outshooting the Knights 27 to 12, and posting 21 shots on goal.  However, the Blue Angels could not find an equalizer to even the match.  The best opportunity for MMU may have came on a strong cross into the box which Kelley Duffy ran on to, despite her best attempt, the header was saved and MMU would come up one goal short on the day.

Time and rest will not be on the side of Mount Mary (2-6) as they head into their next match.  The Blue Angels will once again be at home, this time hosting the Lakeland Muskies on Monday, September 25th.  The match will begin at 4 pm and all live coverage will be available on www.mtmaryathletics.com
