Angels win first set of season, drop two matches at NIU Tri

DUNBAR, Wis. – The Blue Angels finally got a taste of victory, winning the third set in Friday's opening match at the Northland International triangular but they couldn't pull of their first match victory of the year, falling 3-1 to Northland College and 3-0 to Northland International University.

After working through more personnel adjustments, the Blue Angels consistently improved against the Lumberjills of Northland College. After dropping the first sets 25-9, 25-19, the Blue Angels played with focus and raced to a 23-16 third-set lead.

However, Northland reeled off the next eight points to earn set point 24-23. Mount Mary would respond by taking advantage of a NC service error, a kill by freshman Taylor Baumgart (Burlington, Wis.) and an attack error to win it's first set of the 2013 season.

The Angels could not repeat those efforts in the fourth set, as they compiled an attack percent of -.200 to the 'Jills' .229.

Mount Mary could not muster much offensively in its second match of the night either, falling to the host Pioneers 25-13, 25-11, 25-10.

Baumgart, who moved from middle to outside Friday, tallied nine kills on the day while fellow freshmen Grace Rock (Kouts, Ind.) and Andrea Roell (Kingsford, Mich.) each tallied six and Harmony French (Amherst, Wis.) added five.

Freshman setter Phoenix Hulsey (Wauwatosa, Wis.) tallied a season-high 18 digs against Northland College, while junior setter Katie Edwards (Mackinaw, Ill.) added 14.

Mount Mary will have the entire week off before closing out October with five straight home matches, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 22 against Maranatha Baptist Bible College.
